Chapter 11

Mila

I know Chloe is miffed this morning. She doesn’t understand why the mafia had kidnapped her. Her whole world has turned upside down. She is still digesting the fact that we can’t go back to our old lives. Most of all, she hates that we had to leave her beloved cello behind in Philadelphia. I’m not thrilled either to leave everything behind, but what can we do? We have little money, no connections, and worst of all, who knows how long the Marianos will be on our heels? Our best bet is to find a place where we will be safe until the whole thing blows over.

“So who are you?” Chloe asks as we sit down at a roadside diner for breakfast. She has gotten her initial shock of meeting Ethan in the back of his van as he bleeds from his side. Despite being the sweetest girl in the world, she doesn’t like the intrusion into our usual duo. Instinctively, she knows that his presence threatens our sisterly bond.

His dark eyes meet mine and I blush a little. “His name is Ethan. He’s a friend of mine,” I explain.

“Are you two sleeping together?” she asks in a not-so-indoor voice.

“No!” I protest, a little embarrassed.

“Yes,” Ethan answers calmly at the same time.

Chloe’s eyes shift from one of us to the other. Ethan cocks a brow at me as I hide behind a menu. I know better than anyone about my adorable little sister’s sharp tongue and keen eyes.

“So which one is it?” she asks. I want to tap my sister on the head with the laminated menu in my hands to shut her up.

“It’s complicated,” I answer curtly and hope that she’ll drop the topic.

“How well do you even know this guy?” she asks me in a loud whisper. Ethan looks at us amusingly.

I look back at him helplessly. Chloe is right, we don’t know each other very well. I don’t know who he really is and I’m pretty sure he has figured out by now I’m not just a regular maid either. There are enough secrets between us to fill up a truck. My life is, well, complicated. I don’t even know how to begin to explain any of it to Ethan.

“Why are we going to California?” she asks for the fourth time.

I pore over the giant menu. Gosh, how many different breakfast eggs can there be? To be honest, I am in no mood to defend a decision that I am not even sure about. I explain again, “I told you, it’s not safe for us. Those men could be after us.”

“But I thought they were after him.” She rudely points a finger at Ethan, who is sitting across from us. “We can still go back, can’t we?” she begs.

I shake my head impatiently. “We don’t really know what they’re planning. If they took you once, they might do it again. I can’t risk having you be taken from me again.”

Chloe finally leans back in the booth and opens her menu begrudgingly.
